Winburn Prevails in 2026 MATHCOUNTS Regional

Runner-Up SCAPA Also Headed to State

A team of “mathletes” from Winburn Middle School took first place in the 2026 MATHCOUNTS regional contest. Congratulations to Bingqi (Pinkie) Lin, David Sun, Alex Wang, and Aleeza Xiang. SCAPA at Bluegrass was runner-up with Jessina Duan, Bourne Fan, Samuel Ishmael, and Leyang Shi. Bourne, the top-scoring individual, received a full, four-year tuition scholarship offer from Morehead State University and a $500 scholarship from Kentucky MATHCOUNTS.

A total of 101 mathletes from 12 area middle schools competed Feb. 21. Along with the top two teams, several more individual students qualified for state: Daniel Dziubla of Leestown, Satvik Garg of Tates Creek, Alice Liu of SCAPA, Matthias Myrup of Morton, Oliver Stitzer of Tates Creek, and Aarav Tibrewal of Beaumont.

The 43rd Kentucky MATHCOUNTS Competition will be March 14 at the University of Kentucky. There, the top four individual scorers will be offered a $12,000 four-year in-state scholarship from UK’s College of Engineering or a full tuition scholarship to the University of Louisville. They will also advance to the RTX MATHCOUNTS National Competition on May 10 in Washington, D.C.

The local contest was sponsored by the Kentucky Society of Professional Engineers’ Bluegrass Chapter, UK’s College of Engineering, Stantec, Hazen and Sawyer, and Lexmark, a subsidiary of Xerox.
